The author was referancing its uniqueness while also noting it’s mainstream accessibility, which when it comes to surreal or weird cinema, Lynch barely qualifies as mainstream.

That “all style and no substance” critique is thrown around a lot. Half the time I end up thinking, “Did they watch a different movie?” Birdman has plenty of substance, in my opinion. Grand Budapest Motel is a good movie, but I think Birdman is more unique overall, and took more chances (which is better for this list). But hey, we’re free to disagree.

It’s one of those movies people will either love or hate.

Victoria. The Tribe. Memento. But I guess I’m thinking more storytelling

Says anyone who’s never seen the REALLY weird stuff cinema has to offer.

LOOOOOOOOOLL!!! Nah. It aged pretty badly compared to other films of that same year (Boyhood, Grand Budapest Hotel, Whiplash, Noghtcrawler, etc.) All style no substance

Bear in mind, I’ve not seen the film, but the trailer definitely piqued my interest all those years ago when the film was just being released. Every review I’ve read (and believe me, I read many because, based upon its trailer, I seriously WANTED it to be a worthwhile film) lead me to the conclusion that the film was best enjoyed as a trailer. Seeing it on this list was definitely a surprise.
