Nonsense. The Terminal is the fifth best movie he ever made, end of! He channels Frank Capra in that film unlike any other. And no one could’ve made a film better than that in 2004. The Terminal is also seeing more a a resurgence than Empire of the Sun, which was a box office failure and an incredibly boring film too.

Kubrick certainly isn’t as intimate as Spielberg (except, I think Paths of Glory is more passionate than anything Spielberg directed), but I think cynical is a bit of a stretch. Maybe films like Clockwork, but even then I feel like it’s a kind of mock-cynicism

It’s not a “masterpiece” of course, but it’s a taut well-paced thriller

I’d say Munich is the best film on this list, Duel a close second.

Very good slow burner. I forgot that The Post was directed by Spielberg, it was so boring. The Terminal and War Horse were schmaltzy booty.
Munich and War of the Worlds got 7.5 and 6.5 on IMDB, which is about right. A.I. was a mixed bag of awesome visual FX and treacly sappiness.

Empire of the Sun is getting a renaissance recently, which it deserves.
