A skilled actor can preform as required without it, and a director that can do his job properly doesn’t need it to get an actor to preform as required. The “method” is just cloaked pretension over the insecurity about playing pretend for a living.

What I’ve heard is that he was suffering from substance abuse, and playing the dark character certainly didn’t help things, but he was headed down a dark path regardless of the character.
