Yes, the writer of this piece should have had “scores” in the title rather than “soundtracks,” in which case they might want to check out the exciting score to Michael Mann’s Ali, by Pieter Bourke and Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance).

The Thing’s soundtrack is criminally underrated, and the funny thing is that Morricone won the Oscar for Hateful 8 where he used some of his unused/B-side scores from The Thing.

– Solaris (2002) – Cliff Martinez (or any NWR collabs Martinez has done, Drive gets a lot of love but Only God Forgives doesn’t get mentioned enough).
– Conan the Barbarian (1982) – Basil Poledouris. This is one of the all-time great scores.

Everyone talks about his work on Requiem but I think The Fountain has some of the best music ever written for film

I mean, the music in Disney’s Dinosaur (2000) is totally epic and timeless at the same time, and since there is no music done or even recorded way back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, Mr. James Newton Howard was free to invent whatever kind of music to include in that movie’s music score.

Anyway, that will be my honorable mention as far as underrated movie soundtracks or scores.
