Peter Hanson has a great site: Every 70s Movie. He’s opinionated, but who isn’t?

I solidly agree that every film you mentioned are freaking brilliant (Pepe being my fav), except Moontide. I saw it about a decade ago and idk maybe I missed something… I trust your judgment so will revisit it.

Anyways, I’m off to see Dune 2 for the er, 5th time. Much love!

WHOA NELLIE! I’ve never seen that film! Can’t wait to find and watch. I’m in total agreement about Gabin. My FILM NOIR collection starts w/ what are sometimes called proto-noirs, mostly Warner Brothers gangster films w/ a sprinkling of French Poetic Realism films and the best always star Gabin; Pépé le Moko, La Bête Humaine, Port of Shadows and Le Jour se Leve. My love for MOONTIDE, one of two American films he made in the early 1940s, knows no bounds and is a great little, risqué film noir.

Death in Venice is an absolute banger but, alas, not American. Goes back to my other comment about this site lacking international films these days… Cassavetes gets the odd mention here, but yeah for some reason Bogdanovich hardly sees the light of day.

Anyway, great choices! 🙂

They aren’t exactly obscure, per se (but then neither is Jack Nicholson or Gene Hackman).

I would have tried to either lengthen the list or somehow accommodate such criminally-cultish efforts as:

Mikey and Nicky 1976 dir Elaine May
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie 1976 dir Cassavetes
Saint Jack 1979 dir Peter Bogdonovich
