Spielberg and Villeneuve have made many great or good films. Scorsese’s version of Cape Fear is a pretty good remake. Herzog’s version of Nosferatu is great.

You wouldn’t have heard of him, but there’s a little-known Japanese director named Kurosawa… I would start from Ikiru (1952) and continue with Seven Samurai, I Live in Fear, Throne of Blood, The Lower Depths, The Hidden Fortress, The Bad Sleep Well, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low and Red Beard. Oh sorry, that’s eleven, not five.

Sofia Coppola has made very good movies, but I think her only true great movie is Lost in Translation. All the others, to me, pale by comparison.
