The original Purge movie has a rating of 39% on rotten tomatoes while Spectre is considered by many to be the weakest modern Bond film.

The joker is the most overrated movie in the history of cinema

Hahahaha ya, god I hate that kid.
I hear you on the marketing. I often see movies and go with a certain expectation and am disappointed because it didn’t meet what I expected. Sometimes later I realize it was my fault for expecting something the movie isn’t (that’s why I often give OK movies another shot – I’ve seen It Follows 3 times, and It Comes At Night twice, but not a real fan of either).
Occasionally, I’ll be underwhelmed by a movie, watch it again and realize I was just not in the right head space the first time around.

Hey man, sorry if it seemed patronising. I wasn’t insulting your intelligence more blaming the way the films were billed and therefore building a false expectation for the viewer. I’ve seen plenty of films that I didn’t enjoy on first watch because of what the trailers and ad campaigns had led me to expect.

I agree they’re all good movies and not masterpieces. I personally prefer them to more traditional horrors as they are at least trying to do something a bit more original in a genre that can be quite cliche.

Fair point on Babadook, I’m not sure why anyone would describe it as that. Guess films effect people differently. And yeah I get your point. Maybe the screaming kid is why people found it so scary, the thought of having a child like that.

Slightly patronizing, but I understand your point. Also, no.
Hereditary, Misommar, and It Follows are all ‘good’ movies, but far from the ‘masterpieces’ they’ve been proclaimed as.
Also, you said it was the marketing teams. I saw Babadook at Toronto After Dark Film Fest (well before its wide release) and the programmer literally called it “The scariest movie you’ll ever see.” This was at a genre/horror movie festival.
That’s not why I hate Babadook though – not because lack of scares. More so for lack of nuance, coupled with a screaming child throughout.

There’s “Play” which is about racism, maybe you’re talking about that

Oh yeah forgot that was him, I liked Force Majeure a lot. Apparently one of his earlier ones about some boys having a race or something, can’t remember now, I made a note to watch it as it sounded interesting.

I only saw Force Majeure and quite liked it, but not as much as The Square. Check it out though

What is the beef with the Babadook, I think it was just mis-sold by the marketing teams as some sort of terrifying horror when in fact it was a very dark psychological film about grief.

I wanted to like it, and did in parts but it was a frustrating watch. I thought it would grow on me but it didn’t. The directors other works sound more interesting though so I may check them out.
