Movies always stand to be the fastest and most fun way to get good entertainment, but sometimes you want to delve deep into a film that’s going to leave you with more than just a little bit of hollow satisfaction.

Here are 15 films that will leave you completely drained of all of your emotions because who doesn’t like a taste of emotional devastation every now and then?

15. Talhotblond

Talhotblond (2009)

This is a documentary that will blow you away after viewing it for only the first 10 minutes, you won’t believe the sordid actions you’re watching.

Talhotblond tells the story of a man who is apparently disappointed with his life and then decides to embark on an affair with a girl online who calls herself Talhotblond. The film becomes highly emotional when a young man gets pulled into the twisted and deranged game between the two and someone, unbelievably, gets murdered. By the end of the film you will have to keep reminding yourself, what you saw was real, that it happened… and there’s a twist ending that will officially rip your heart out and leave it on the floor for you.

14. An American Crime

an-american-crime

This heartbreaking tale of child abuse during a more “innocent” time is hard to watch all the way through, but it’s a story that shouldn’t be ignored.

An American Crime tells the true story of a girl who was sent to live with a stranger she met at church while her parents ran off to join the circus. Seriously, they left her with a complete stranger while they worked at the circus. The woman despises the innocence she sees in the girl and begins to abuse her when a check from her parents comes a little late.

The scenes of abuse are tastefully done, but still no easier to watch. They will manage to make you squirm as you witness the abuse of a completely innocent girl. What will really leave you unable to shake the film once the credits stop rolling, watching other children join in on the abuse.

13. Downfall

downfall

This movie was nominated for an Oscar in the best foreign film category. The movie is based on the memoir written by Traudi Jung, who was a young secretary who served beside Hitler until his final hours. The story describes what it was like being with Hitler trapped in his bunker during the final days of the war.

The movie also displays the chaos going on outside of the bunker on the streets of Germany with unflinching detail. It’s a must see period piece whose emotional power can be felt long after the credits roll.

12. The Bay

the bay movie

The Bay is an environmental horror story about a small town that is turned inside out (literally) by a mutant parasite determined to make the residents their host. It’s one of the best found footage films ever and it serves as a very smart, adult horror story. Watching the systematic infestation and gory murder of an entire town is extremely emotionally debilitating.

11. American Psycho

american-psycho-2000

This dark comedy has a strong cult following because of its searing dark satirical look at 1980s culture. Christian Bale gives a star turning performance as Patrick Bateman, a typical 80’s yuppie and escalating Psychopath. Even by today’s standard, the Unrated version is pretty shocking to witness. This film is not for everyone and even if you like it you’re still depressed by the casual violence the main character dishes out and wondering “what the hell did I just sit through?”

10. The Fourth Kind

the-fourth-kind

A therapist discovers that during her sessions with patients, she has come upon evidence that they all have suffered the fourth level of an alien encounter: Abduction. Different techniques often used in found footage films are used in this movie and executed very well.

The movie continues to grow increasingly disturbing as the patience’s experience with the aliens grow more violent and completely ruin their lives. By the end of the movie you’ll feel just as bewildered as the therapist who doesn’t know whether some incidences are really alien related or big signs of mental illness. The plot line grows darker and darker to the very end and you’re more likely to become sadder and sadder.

9. Dahmer

Dahmer

This film has been credited with putting actor Jeremy Renner on the acting map and it is not hard to see why. His performance as infamous serial killer Jeffery Dahmer is so chilling that your mood will start to tank in about 15 minutes flat.

It is not unnecessarily gory or shocking for no reason; at times it is very subtle with its horror, although it never tries to sugar coat it. The movie becomes an entirely new emotional experience when you try to wrap your mind around how a seemingly normal person can carry on such despicable violence in a most unassuming way.

15 Movies With Shockingly Realistic Ending http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2014/15-movies-with-shockingly-realistic-ending/ http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2014/15-movies-with-shockingly-realistic-ending/#comments Thu, 09 Jan 2014 01:45:39 +0000 https://www.tasteofcinema.com/?p=15107 movie realistic endings

Most movie goers view films to be entertained and escape from reality, so it is not hard to understand why most films have completely unrealistic endings. Every now-and-then a movie comes along that has an ending so realistic, it often leaves us shocked.

WARNING: this post is about realistic endings so, if you don’t want to see a spoiler on a movie you haven’t seen yet feel free to skip that movie. Be sure to continue to read about what made the other endings so shocking and maybe live on the wild side a bit and take a spoiler peek.

1. Funny Games

funny-games

This deep psychological thriller is about two ordinary looking young men who invade a family’s home, takes them hostage and murders them. The director really proceeds to mess with you as the seemingly ordinary murderer talks directly to the camera and makes you feel guilty about watching the systematic murder of an entire, innocent family.

What makes the end so realistic: The entire family is murdered and the killers start immediately after looking for another family to torture. This ending further reminds us that in life the good guys don’t always win and murderers are often free to kill many people before being caught.

2. Irreversible

Irreversible

Indie French film Irreversible tells the story of a woman who is brutally raped and the actions her male friends take after the incident. The film is told in reverse and the rape scene is shown in real time making it extremely hard for many people to watch.

What makes the end so realistic: The final scene is the beautiful woman starting the day reading a book in the park. You know the horrible things about to happen to her, but there is nothing she can do to avoid her fate as she doesn’t even know what’s coming. The end brings home the message that there is often nothing we can do to change how our days will turn out.

3. Requiem For a Dream

requiem_for_a_dream

One of the few films that takes an unapologetic look at the world of addiction through the eyes of an older woman, her son, the son’s girlfriend and the son’s friend. It’s an urban nightmare at its strongest.

What makes the end so realistic: The entire film is disorienting and can evoke many moments of squirming, but it’s the end that makes the entire thing one of the most depressing endings in history. It’s the realization that most drug addicts sell their soul to drugs way before they even think about getting help. The director doesn’t sugar coat this truthful message at all!

17 Disturbing Horror Movies You Will Never Watch Again http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2013/17-disturbing-horror-movies-you-will-never-watch-again-2/ http://www.tasteofcinema.com/2013/17-disturbing-horror-movies-you-will-never-watch-again-2/#comments Sat, 21 Dec 2013 14:50:35 +0000 https://www.tasteofcinema.com/?p=14684

Horror films are supposed to scare us, creep us out, and make us feel uncomfortable. But sometimes, there is a film that go so far outside of the norm (and our comfort zone), that after we see it, we never want to see it again. In no particular order (because they’re all pretty hard to stomach), here are 17 Disturbing Horror films.

1. The Exorcist

The Exorcist is known as one of the scariest films of all time. While most people don’t debate that, what they do debate is its watchability. Many people have said that they chose to sit through it once for curiosity, but what they saw was so terrifying that they never wanted to see it again.

Maybe it was the sight of a little girl masturbating with a crucifix or of her head spinning a full 360 degrees. It also might have been the spider crawl Regan did down the stairs. There are plenty of reasons why you’d never watch this classic horror film more than once.

2. The Woman

the-woman-horror-movie

The Woman is about a seemingly “normal” family who takes in the last remaining member of a cannibalistic tribe. It doesn’t take long for you to see that the family might be more barbaric than the prisoner.

The excessive gore (usually revolving around cannibalism) and a sexual assault performed by a child will ensure that you will never want to see this film more than once. Don’t get me wrong, this film makes a serious statement about misogynistic behavior and the people we deem “normal” in everyday society. It’s worth a watch… but only one.once.

3.  The Human Centipede

Dr. Heiter in The Human Centipede

This movie might win the award for the tackiest film of the year and it really isn’t necessary to watch even one time. The film follows the exploits of a sadistic scientist who sews 3 victims together, mouth-to-anus, in order to create one long digestive tract. The first time one of the victims has a bowel movement, you’ll have trouble convincing yourself to finish the film once, let alone finding a reason to watch it ever again.

4. Hostel

Director Eli Roth, torture porn king, made a huge splash in the indie circuit with this outrageously gory and torture-ridden horror film about three Americans traveling through Europe. These empty-headed too-old-to-be-frat-boys get caught up in a terrible game of human hunting and the events that follow will never leave you once you’ve seen them.

The torture scenes are drawn out to prolong the gruesomeness, but there is absolutely no pay off to any of them, so there is really no reason to ever see this unnecessarily violent movie ever again.

5. The Last House on The Left

The original film, made in the 1970s, is considered a cult classic. However, its source of fame is pretty disturbing: the remake and the original both feature a long and graphic rape scene of two girls out in the woods.

By the time you see the rapists get much deserved justice in the most brutal of ways (the remake having way more brutality than the original film), you will feel both content and disgusted with yourself about why you were so happy to witness the brutal torture of another human being. Even when the rapists become victims, it’s enough to make you say “Once is enough.”

6. The Girl Next Door

Ruth Chandler in The Girl Next Door (2007)

The Girl Next Door is a horrific story about a woman who sexually, physically and mentally tortures a young girl who is staying at her residence. Another film entitled An American Crime stayed close to the actual, terrible event. Yes, some of the things in the film did happen to a poor young girl when she was staying with a psychopath while her parents ran off and joined the circus (literally).

If seeing a girl being sexually assaulted with a coke bottle and watching children torture another child isn’t enough to stop you from watching a film twice, nothing will.

7. Maniac

This one is a relatively new horror film about a young man (played by Elijah Wood, in a career pinnacle performance) who is way more obsessed with store mannequins than he should be. Oh yeah, and he’s a serial killer with some serious social issues.

What makes this serial killer film so unique is that the audience witnesses the entire film through the eyes of the killer. You only see his face in mirrors or shiny surfaces. Witnessing the gruesome murders (most of which contain scalping afterwards) in 1st person point-of-view makes this film impossible not to stop watching. But, that dirty feeling have when the move ends makes you want to never watch it again.

8. Insidious

This movie follows the strange (and damn creepy) events of a family haunted by a supernatural being that seems to follow the father wherever he goes. Sounds pretty typical, right? Not hardly. The jump scares are plenty, there’s one of the most frightening demons you will ever see on film, and let’s not even talk about that creepy dancing shadow. This film will scare you so bad, you’ll think twice about watching it again… if you ever do.
