It is probably worth noting that for Nanook of the North, Flaherty had plenty of footage taken in 1913 to make what we think of today as a more conventional documentary. Unfortunately all of his footage burned (the moral here is don’t smoke around highly flammable material). Years later in 1920 he was able to return to film again the Inuit life, which had changed over the years. Much of the recreation was to recapture that earlier footage. So while he was inventing long form documentary, he was also testing the boundaries of re-enactments.

However, with regard to the greater message of the movie, the criticism seems to be just minor points that, although legit, have nothing to do with the fact that animals like orcas shouldn’t be caged by men. Blackfish is a really good documentary that barely fits in this list (controversial).

The Bridge is really shaking and controversial, but, again, really good. The main reason why they didnt tell anybody what the documentary is about, is that the makers feared that suicidals would jump just to be in the movie. In my opinion thats quite plausible.

The act of killing is just an example for a perfect documentary, but a strong mind and stomach is needed.

Great list!
