I think there’s a context to the weird in connection to film as being it’s own language beyond words and also how it connects with our species evolving.
I see Lynch and Kubrick as being two of the best at this art, and Joderosky and Cronnenberg as being just mostly surface and amateur

Referring to the opening statement, I disagree that early cinema was all about reproduction of reality. The inverse was actually largely true. For early practicioners of cinema, Georges Melies and the works of Edison’s studio among many others, cinema was the next logical step for illusionists and stage magicians, and they strove to bring visual impossibilities to a thrill-seeking audience. Otherwise, this is a very satisfying list.
