People care much more about “subject matter” than the actual product, and how it conveys the human experience. Is it about the disenfranchised? Then it’s well-intentioned and important and therefore is default good/great.
I’m not even going to get into how over hyped Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name are (although good movies), and how there have been much better movies in recent years that deal with similar subject matter and are overlooked because they don’t have the Oscar sheen.

As a comedy nerd I see it most in comedies. Where a movie like Blockers gets heralded as a “classic” but is hardly funny and out of the 8 leads has one actual comedian. Critics (and fans) alike praise it for being so progressive, and if you read reviews many even mention how there are lots of sentimental moments and can be light on comedy.
So you’re calling a comedy a great “comedy” while simultaneously admitting that its weakest aspect is its comedy?

And ‘Selma’ wasn’t “amazing” at all – it was decent made-for-TV movie with important subject.
