The Batman is very similar in tone, themes, editing, blocking of actors and directing to Fritz Lang’s “M” and “Testament of dr. Mabuse”. The director has clearly studied Lang’s films, not to mention Pattison’s Bruce Wayne is straight out of Viene’s silent film masterpiece “Cabinet of dr. Caligari”. But the audience is mostly and vastly ignorant of those important movie classics and see only Nolan, Burton and co.

In reply to Charles David Sheldon. Also he didn't really portray the riddler, as he is no psychotic serial killer, but that doesn't matter, the movie still has the greatest movie Batman since Burton's version. Though Pattinson is still miscast as Bruce. Luckily with few scenes.

And forever overrated, those damn Nolan Batmans, especially The dark knight, which feature Batman in name only. The Batman is the best Batman movie since the Burton Batmans.
